DISEASES & SYMPTOMS

Labyrinthitis

Labyrinthitis is a condition that can disrupt your hearing and balance.

Labyrinthitis may sound like an intricate term, but it refers to a condition that affects the inner ear.

What Is Labyrinthitis?

Labyrinthitis is an inner ear disorder characterised by inflammation or infection of the labyrinth, a delicate structure responsible for both hearing and balance. This condition can be unsettling as it disrupts not only your hearing but also your spatial awareness.

Recognising the Symptoms

Symptoms of labyrinthitis can vary but often include:

  • Vertigo: A sensation of spinning or dizziness.
  • Hearing Changes: Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or sensitivity to sounds (hyperacusis).
  • Nausea and Vomiting: Due to severe dizziness.
  • Balance Issues: Difficulty maintaining balance, especially during sudden movements.

Causes and Risk Factors

Labyrinthitis can have various causes, including viral or bacterial infections, which can sometimes follow an upper respiratory infection or cold. Other risk factors include a history of ear infections or a compromised immune system.

Diagnosis and Treatment

If you suspect you have labyrinthitis or are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned, it’s essential to seek professional help promptly.

Treatment may include medications to address the underlying infection or inflammation. In some cases, vestibular rehabilitation exercises like the Epley manoeuvre may be recommended to improve balance.
